It is grown in most of the states in India but is found to have concentrated in nine states, namely. Rajastl-ian, Gujarat. Haryana. Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh. Tamil Nadu. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. thus showing its adaptability not only across physio-geographic but also across socio-economic environments and its resilience to grow in most unfavourable el'tvironmenb such as parts of Rajasthan.! The key feature. however, is th~t 'the crop is largely grown in dry and marginal lands. on which the poor depend for their livelihood.
