"The heartland of the CGIAR’s renewed vision is to\r\nreduce poverty and food insecurity, particularly in\r\nthe marginal environments that have largely been\r\nbypassed by previous research. The constraints of\r\nharsh environments and limited farm resources\r\nof the poor in many ways present a greater\r\nchallenge than even the heroic achievements of\r\nthe Green Revolution. But it is the most direct\r\npath to poverty reduction.\r\nThe accomplishments of ICRISAT’s\r\npartnership-based chickpea research-fordevelopment\r\nthrust over the past quarter\r\ncentury constitute a strong validation of this\r\nbold new direction. Over 100 improved varieties\r\nhave been released, including a new type of\r\nadaptation that has enabled the crop to extend\r\nits range far south of its historical zone; adding a\r\nsecond crop – where previously only one crop\r\nper year was grown – through varieties that\r\nmature on residual soil moisture alone;\r\nresistance to the fusarium wilt disease;\r\nintegrated control options for botrytis gray mold\r\ndisease; enhanced root mass for drought\r\nresistance; an understanding of resistance\r\nmechanisms against an intractable pest, the\r\nhelicoverpa pod borer insect; and molecular\r\nmarker and gene transformation techniques to\r\nsignificantly accelerate breeding progress in the\r\ncoming years. All these scientific and\r\ndevelopment accomplishments have been\r\nunderpinned by intensive partnerships that\r\nhave built national capacities that will enhance\r\npayoffs for decades to come.\r\nChickpea is by far the most important\r\nleguminous food grain, or pulse, in the diets of\r\nthe peoples of South Asia.
