bibo:abstract "An understanding of the genetic and environmental\r\nbasis of genotype´environment interaction (GEI)\r\nis of fundamental importance in plant breeding. In mapping\r\nquantitative trait loci (QTLs), suitable genetic populations\r\nare grown in different environments causing\r\nQTLs´environment interaction (QEI). The main objective\r\nof the present study is to show how Partial Least\r\nSquares (PLS) regression and Factorial Regression (FR)\r\nmodels using genetic markers and environmental covariables\r\ncan be used for studying QEI related to GEI. Biomass\r\ndata were analyzed from a multi-environment trial\r\nconsisting of 161 lines from a F3:4 maize segregating\r\npopulation originally created with the purpose of mapping\r\nQTLs loci and investigating adaptation differences\r\nbetween highland and lowland tropical maize. PLS and\r\nFR methods detected 30 genetic markers (out of 86) that\r\nexplained a sizeable proportion of the interaction of\r\nmaize lines over four contrasting environments involving\r\ntwo low-altitude sites, one intermediate-altitude site, and\r\none high-altitude site for biomass production. Based on a\r\nprevious study, most of the 30 markers were associated\r\nwith QTLs for biomass and exhibited significant QEI. It\r\nwas found that marker loci in lines with positive GEI for\r\nthe highland environments contained more highland alleles,\r\nwhereas marker loci in lines with positive GEI for\r\nintermediate and lowland environments contained more\r\nlowland alleles. In addition, PLS and FR models identified maximum temperature as the most-important environmental\r\ncovariable for GEI. Using a stepwise variable\r\nselection procedure, a FR model was constructed for\r\nGEI and QEI that exclusively included cross products\r\nbetween genetic markers and environmental covariables.\r\nHigher maximum temperature in low- and intermediatealtitude\r\nsites affected the expression of some QTLs,\r\nwhile minimum temperature affected the expression of\r\nother QTLs."^^xsd:string;
