bibo:abstract "To enhance the level of resistance to insects in\r\ntropical maize germplasm we have developed techniques\r\nto successfully transform elite tropical maize inbred\r\nbased on the activity of specific cryI proteins against\r\nfour major maize pests – corn earworm, fall armyworm,\r\nsouthwestern corn borer and sugarcane borer. Constructs\r\ncontaining cryIAb or cryIAc synthetic genes were used.\r\nTo generate transgenic plants we have established methods\r\nfor biolistic bombardment and the selection and regeneration\r\nof immature embryos and calli from the elite\r\ntropical lines CML72, CML216, CML323, CML327 and\r\nhybrids. Transgenic plants resistant to the herbicide BastaTM\r\ncontained the bands for the cry, bar and gus genes\r\nas detected by Southern blot analyses. A simple leaf bioassay\r\npresented varying levels of resistance to Southwestern\r\ncorn borer of transgenic tropical maize carrying\r\nthe cryIAc gene. Analyses of the progenies confirmed\r\nthe sexual transmission of the introduced genes and their\r\nstable expression"^^xsd:string;
