"Sweet sorghum is a multipurpose biofuel\r\nfeedstock that offers grain for human consumption, fodder\r\nfor livestock and ethanol for transportation purposes. The\r\nknowledge on sugar components at different phenological\r\nstages of crop growth and identification of appropriate\r\nstage of harvesting is critical for sweet sorghum commercialization\r\nand value chain sustenance. In this regard, sweet\r\nsorghum stalk yield, juice yield, Brix%, pH, sugars\r\n(sucrose, fructose and glucose) and their content were\r\nanalyzed at three different phenological stages i.e. the\r\ndough stage, physiological maturity and post-physiological\r\nmaturity. Variations in sugar content at different growth\r\nstages revealed that the sugar yield was high at physiological\r\nmaturity, but highest at post-physiological maturity.\r\nSucrose accounts for major fermentable sugar (about 70%)\r\nand it sharply increased by 146% from dough stage to postphysiological\r\nmaturity. The variation in the monosaccharides\r\ncontent (glucose and fructose) is not statistically\r\nsignificant. This study points to the potential scope for\r\nwidening the harvesting window of sweet sorghum, by\r\ncutting the stalks from physiological maturity stage and\r\nbeyond up to 15 days (post-physiological maturity), thus\r\nhelping the commercial distilleries by addressing a major impediment in sweet sorghum value chain.
