Generally, intercropping was advantageous wi th a small reduction in rice yield and a substantial increase in yield of the legume. Pigeon pea- r ice systems gave the highest intercropping advantage of 4 1 - 7 4 % in the first year. In the second year, high intercropping advantages were recorded for cowpea and pigeon pea intercrops but the indeterminate pigeon pea cv. Hy 3C reduced the expected rice yield by half. High irradiance early in the rainy season increased the growth and yield of both rice and legumes compared to the previous season, but intercrop rice was less competitive than Hy 3C. Canopy cover of rice was slowest compared to cowpea and pigeon pea, largely because of the erect leaf arrangement of rice. Intercropping invariably increased the amount of radiation intercepted due to faster canopy cover, i.e., spatial complementarity. It was concluded that determinate legumes are more appropriate for intercropping wi th upland rice. date: 1994 date_type: published publication: Tropical Agriculture(Trinidad) volume: 71 number: 1 publisher: Ritsumeikan University pagerange: 5-11 refereed: TRUE issn: 0041-3216 related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?as_q=Productivity+and+light+interception+in+upland+rice+-+legume+intercropping+systems&num=10&btnG=Search+Scholar&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&as_sdt=1.&as_sdtp=on&as_ related_url_type: pub citation: Ramakrishna, A and Ong, C K (1994) Productivity and light interception in upland rice - legume intercropping systems.
