Bui the quantum ol yield advances made through breeding In cereals such as malic, sorghum. mlliol etc, is much higher than those o( pulses. This distinction of cereals has been primarily due to commercial exploitation ot hybrid vigour. The pulses, however, hava lagged behind In making use ol heietosis breeding mainly due to iack gl economic mass-pollen transfer mechanism and non-availability ol effective mate-sterility system. Although the floral biology of some pulses, permit partial natural-out-crossing but with the exception ol pigeonpea, Ihe hybrid vigour tor yield has not been exploited commercially In any other crop. The Innovative research conducted In the pas! 25 years in developing hybrid pigeonpea breeding technology has resulted in the release ol a few commercial hybrids In India. The adoption of ihese hybrids, however, is restricted due to seed production llmliations posed by genetic nature of inate-stertllty. This paper, besides reviewing the extent of heterosis available in different pulse crops, discusses scope, challenges, and the latest achievements in the research and development of commercial hybrid breeding In pigeonpea.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">Agriculture-Farming, Production, Technology, Economics</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2002</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Conference or Workshop Item</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_5206"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_5206_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
