relation: http://oar.icrisat.org/5138/ title: Breeding for disease and pest resistance in pearl millet creator: Williams, R J creator: Andrews, D J subject: Millets description: The present status of the control of biological agents causing yield losses in pearl millet is reviewed. The possibilities of controlling diseases, insect pests, weeds and grain-eating birds by breeding cultivars with durable resistance are discussed. In future breeding research in this crop, areas needing to be emphasized include: evaluation of the nature and inheritance of disease resistance; development of strategies to increase the durability of resistance to diseases; investigations into the possibility of using complex multiple barriers to disease pathogens; additional survey work and the development and use of effective screening techniques for insect pests; evaluation of integrated control strategies against insects; development and use of screening techniques to identify and develop cultivars resistant to witchweed; and investigation of cultural practices and breeding techniques to control shibra in Sahelian Africa. date: 1983 type: Conference or Workshop Item type: PeerReviewed format: application/pdf language: en identifier: http://oar.icrisat.org/5138/1/0117.pdf identifier: Williams, R J and Andrews, D J (1983) Breeding for disease and pest resistance in pearl millet.
