	bibo:abstract "Recently, a breeding technology for hybrid\r\npigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] based\r\non cytoplasmic-nuclear male sterility (CMS)\r\nand partial natural outcrossing was developed\r\nat ICRISAT. The limited number of experimental\r\nhybrids tested has shown the presence of a\r\nconsiderable amount of hybrid vigor for seed\r\nyield. In the present study, one extra-early- (120\r\nd), two early- (150 d), and two late-maturing (180\r\nd) pigeonpea hybrids were studied to generate\r\ninformation on the genetics of fertility restoration\r\nof the A4 CMS system. In the extra-earlymaturing\r\nhybrids, pollen fertility was controlled\r\nby a single dominant gene, whereas in the earlyand\r\nlate- maturing hybrids, male fertility was\r\ngoverned by two duplicate dominant genes. It\r\nwas also observed that hybrids with two dominant\r\ngenes produced a greater pollen load and\r\nexpressed greater stability as compared with\r\nthose carrying a single dominant gene. The\r\ninformation on the inheritance of fertility restoration\r\nwill help in designing strategies for breeding\r\nelite hybrid parents, and it was concluded\r\nthat for breeding hybrids with stable fertility restoration,\r\nthe presence of two dominant genes\r\nis essential."^^xsd:string;
