	bibo:abstract "Soil solarization greatly reduced the native\r\nchickpea Rhirbbium population. With inoculation, it\r\nwas possible to increase the population of the Rhizobium\r\nin solarized plots. In the 1st year, 47% nodulation was\r\nobtained with chickpea inoculant strain 1C 59 when introduced\r\nwith a cereal crop 2 weeks after the soil solarization\r\nand having a native Rhizobium count of <log-'\r\nsoil, and only 13% when introduced 16 wceks after\r\nsolarization at the time the chickpeas were sown, with\r\n2.01~d native rhizobia g-' soil. In the non-solarized\r\nplots inoculated with 5.61~d native rhiiohia g-' soil,\r\nonly 6% nodulation was obtained with the inoculant. In\r\nthe succeeding ycar, non-inoculated chickpea was grown\r\non the same plots without any solarization or Rhizobium\r\ninoculation The treatment that showed good establishment\r\nof the inoculant strain in ycar I formed 6840 inoculant\r\nnodules. Other treatments indicated a further reduction\r\nin inoculant success, from 1% - 13% to\r\n1 % - 9%. Soil solarization thus allowed an inoculant\r\nstrain to successfully displace the high native population\r\nin the field and can serve as a research tool to compare\r\nstrains in the field, irreswive of comwtitive ability."^^xsd:string;
