In southern and eastern Africa, pigeonpea constitutes an important component of dry land production systems where its dry, whole seeds are used for making soup mixed with or without meat and the green, mature seeds as a vegetable. Although pigeonpea is not a field crop in South Africa, approximately 120-150 tonnes of decorticated, dry, split-peas (locally known as “oil-dhal”) are imported monthly to meet the demand of the local Asian community. date: 2005 date_type: published pagerange: 1-11 event_title: In Proceedings of the First International Edible Legume Conference in Conjunction with the IVth World Cowpea Congress event_location: Durban, South Africa event_dates: 17–21 April 2005 event_type: conference refereed: TRUE related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?as_q=Prospects+for+pigeonpea+cultivation+in+drought-prone+areas+of+South+Africa&num=10&btnG=Search+Scholar&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&as_sdt=1.&as_sdtp=on&as_sdtf=&a related_url_type: author citation: Mathews, C and Saxena, K B (2005) Prospects for pigeonpea cultivation in drought-prone areas of South Africa.
