Seeds intended\r\nfor storage should have high germinability and viability\r\nshould be monitored by periodical germination tests\r\nduring storage. Even for the seeds stored under optimal\r\nconditions suitable for long-term storage, viability may\r\ndecrease as a result of deterioration processes such as: an\r\nincrease of the free radical content, changes in protein\r\nstructure, depletion of food reserves, acidification of fat,\r\nchanges in enzymatic activity, membrane damage,\r\nchromosomal changes and an increase in respiration\r\n(Justice and Bass 1979).
