"Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), primarily grown for\r\ngrain production on more than 26 million ha in the arid\r\nand semi-arid tropical (SAT) regions of Asia and Africa,\r\nis a highly nutritious cereal crop with wide\r\nagroecological adaptation. India, the largest producer of\r\nthis crop at global level, cultivates pearl millet on about\r\n>9 million ha contributing to more than 90% area of the\r\ncrop in the Asian region. It is a highly cross pollinated\r\ncrop, and single-cross hybrids generally give 20–30%\r\nmore yield than open pollinated varieties (Rai et al.\r\n2006).
