"Effects of organic and mineral fertilizer nitrogen on greenhouse gas emissions and plant-captured carbon under maize cropping in Zimbabwe \r\n"^^ . "Optimizing a three-way pact comprising\r\ncrop yields, fertility inputs and greenhouse gases may\r\nminimize the contribution of croplands to global\r\nwarming. Fluxes of N2O, CO2 and CH4 from soil\r\nwere measured under maize (Zea mays L.) grown\r\nusing 0, 60 and 120 kg N hm-2 as NH4NO3-N and\r\ncomposted manure-N in three seasons on clay\r\n(Chromic luvisol) and sandy loam (Haplic lixisol)\r\nsoils in Zimbabwe. The fluxes were measured using\r\nthe static chamber methodology involving gas chromatography\r\nfor ample air analysis. Over an average of\r\n122 days we estimated emissions of 0.1 to 0.5 kg\r\nN2O-N hm−2, 711 to 1574 kg CO2-C hm−2 and−2.6 to\r\n5.8 kg CH4-C hm−2 from six treatments during season\r\nII with the highest fluxes. The posed hypothesis that\r\ncomposted manure-N may be better placed as a\r\nmitigation option against soil emissions of GHG than\r\nmineral fertilizer-N was largely supported by N2O\r\nfluxes during the wet period of the year, but with high\r\nlevel of uncertainty. Nitrogen addition might have\r\nstimulated both emissions and consumption of CH4\r\nbut the sink or source strength depended highly on\r\nsoil water content. We concluded that the application\r\nof mineral-N and manure input may play an important\r\nrole with reference to global warming provided the\r\nseason can support substantial crop productivity that\r\nmay reduce the amount of N2O loss per unit yield.\r\nConfidence in fluxes response to agricultural management\r\nis still low due to sporadic measurements\r\nand limited observations from the southern African\r\nregion."^^ .
