"Nitrogen accumulation in three legumes and two cereals\r\nwith emphasis on estimation of N2 fixation in the legumes\r\nby the natural15 N-abundance technique"^^ . "N accumulation and natural \"N ahundance\r\nin three legumes (groundnuts, cowpeas, and\r\nsoybeans) and in two cereals (sorghum and maize)\r\nwere investigated over two seasons in Alfisols with and\r\nwithout N fertilization. Using the N uptake and natural\r\n\"N abundance of non-nodulating plants as the indication\r\nof N derived from soil and fertilizer, the per\r\ncent N derived from atmospheric N2 was calculated\r\nfor nodulated plants. In the first experiment, the\r\ngroundnut genotype contained 85% atmospherc-derived\r\nN, but the percentage decreased with N application,\r\nEstimates of atmosphere-derived N by the N-difference\r\nand 15~-abundanctee chniques gave identical\r\nresults. The percentages of atmosphere-derived N estimated\r\nby the two methods at different stages of\r\ngroundnut growth were also similar. In the second experiment,\r\natmosphere-derived N was estimated in\r\nplants grown with 0-200 kg ha-' applied N. The estimated\r\natmosphere-derived N ranged from 42% to\r\n61 % for groundnuts from 33% to 77% for cowpeas,\r\nand from 24% to 48% for soybeans, depending on the\r\namount of N applied. Inoculation with a Bradyrhizobium\r\nstrain increased the percentage of atmospherederived\r\nN in soybean plants grown without any fertilizer\r\nN. The natural \"N abundance of sorghum and\r\nmaize was very close to that of the non-nodulating\r\ngroundnut, suggesting that these cereals can be used as\r\nreference plants in the estimation of atmosphere-derived\r\nN by the natural \"N-abundance method."^^ .
