	bibo:abstract "One of the main sources of productivity growth in dryland\r\nagriculture in India in the 1980s and 1990s will be varietal change.\r\nWe take stock of some promising types of varietal change in four\r\nICRISAT mandate crops-sorghum, pearl millet, pigeonpea, and\r\ngroundnut. We discuss the role of economists in integrating information\r\nsystematically from several sources to assess researchable\r\nproblems and alternative solutions in crop improvement research in\r\nthe third section.
