"Accounting for population structure to minimize\r\nspurious associations in association analyses is of\r\ncrucial importance. With sorghum genomic sequence\r\ninformation being available, there is a growing interest in\r\nperforming such association studies for a number of\r\nimportant agronomic traits using a candidate gene\r\napproach. The aims of our study were to conduct a systematic\r\nsurvey of molecular genetic diversity and analyze\r\nthe population structure in cultivated sorghum [Sorghum\r\nbicolor (L.) Moench] accessions from West Africa. Our\r\nanalysis included 219 West African cultivated sorghum\r\naccessions with differing maturity intended for a markertrait\r\nassociation study. A total of 27 SSRs were used, which\r\nresulted in detection of 513 alleles. Genetic diversity estimates\r\nfor the accessions were found to be high. The\r\naccessions were divided into two subgroups using a modelbased\r\napproach. Our findings partly agree with previous\r\nstudies in that the guinea race accessions could be distinguished\r\nclearly from other accessions included in the\r\nanalysis. Race and geographical origin of the accessions\r\nmay be responsible for the structure we observed in our\r\nmaterial.
