It is cultivated mainly in Algeria, Ethiopia, Iran, India, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Pakistan, Spain, Syria, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Turkey. In 1997 it was cultivated worldwide on 11.33 million ha, with 8.80 million t production. Of the total world production 91% is produced in Asia, and in Asia, India accounts for 74.8% production. The average world productivity of 0.78 t ha-1 is rather low.
