"Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) cultivation in China is being\r\nrevived primarily for soil conservation and fodder\r\nproduction. Experiments show that in certain areas freezing\r\ntemperatures (<0°C) cause considerable damage to the\r\nfoliage of the crop. Considering the potential of pigeonpea\r\nin China, this study was conducted to understand the\r\nnature and magnitude of damage caused by freezing\r\ntemperatures and to assess the feasibility of identifying\r\nfreezing tolerant genotypes.\r\nThree genotypes (ICPL 151, ICP 8863, ICP 11298)\r\nbred by the International Crops Research Institute for the\r\nSemi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru, India and\r\none local landrace were evaluated. Four test sites were\r\nselected in different agroecological zones in Yunnan\r\nprovince in China. At each location, about 500 plants of\r\neach genotype were grown in June 1999 in an unreplicated\r\nblock. The crop was grown with recommended cultural\r\npractices. In September/October, 30 competitive plants\r\nof each genotype were tagged randomly during the\r\nvegetative stage and in January 2000, these plants were\r\nscored for frost injury on five-point scale as: 0 = resistant,\r\nno visible symptom of damage; 1 = tolerant, up to 10%\r\nleaves killed; 2 = moderately tolerant, only terminal branches\r\nand tender leaves killed; 3 = moderately susceptible,\r\nupper-half of plant canopy killed; and 4 = susceptible,\r\nentire plant killed. In March 2000, when the temperatures\r\nfor pigeonpea growth were conducive, 40 moderately\r\nsusceptible (score 3) plants were tagged randomly in\r\neach block for visual assessment for their regeneration\r\ncapability. Mean frost injury grade (ã) and average frost\r\ninjury index (δ) were estimated for each genotype using\r\nthe formulae given by Wang (1987):\r\nΣ (a × n) Σ (a × n)\r\nã =\r\n________ δ = _______\r\nN amax × N\r\nwhere a = frost injury score; n = index in certain grade;\r\nand N = total number of plants."^^ .
