Impressive results have\r\nbeen obtained with the expression of Bacillus thuringiensis\r\n(Bt) and other toxin genes in several crops.\r\nHowever, both exotic and plant-derived genes have\r\nsome performance limitations, and there have been\r\nsome failures in insect control through transgenic\r\ncrops. The production and deployment of transgenic\r\ncrops for pest control need to address the issues related\r\nto impact of the transgenic crops on the insect\r\npests, ecological cost of resistance development,\r\neffects on the nontarget organisms, availability and\r\ndistribution of the alternate host plants, and the\r\npotential for introgression of genes into the wild\r\nrelatives of crops.
