The production system now is under threat due to stagnating or declining total factor productivity. Legumes can play a significant role in enhancing the factor productivity of this most important and productive production system in the country. Ironically, rice and wheat have replaced the principal legumes over a period of time. With the availability of high-yielding and short-duration varieties of important legumes, there is a need to incorporate them in RWCS to improve the sustainability of the system so as to meet future food grain demands without degradation of the natural resource base. date: 2000 date_type: published publisher: International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics place_of_pub: Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India pagerange: 166-175 refereed: TRUE isbn: 92-9066-418-5 book_title: Legumes in rice and wheat cropping systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plain - constraints and opportunities editors_name: Johansen, C editors_name: Duxbury, J M editors_name: Virmani, S M editors_name: Gowda, C L L editors_name: Pande, S editors_name: Joshi, P K related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?as_q=Total+factor+productivity+of+rice-wheat+cropping+systems+in+India+-+The+role+of+legumes&num=10&btnG=Search+Scholar&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&as_sdt=1.&as_sdtp= related_url_type: author citation: Kumar, P and Joshi, P K and Johansen, C and Asokan, M (2000) Total factor productivity of rice-wheat cropping systems in India - the role of legumes.
