The production system now is under threat due to stagnating or declining total factor productivity. Legumes can play a significant role in enhancing the factor productivity of this most important and productive production system in the country. Ironically, rice and wheat have replaced the principal legumes over a period of time. With the availability of high-yielding and short-duration varieties of important legumes, there is a need to incorporate them in RWCS to improve the sustainability of the system so as to meet future food grain demands without degradation of the natural resource base.
