"In this chapter, attempts have been made to synthesize, in summary\r\nform, the major recommendations presented in the previous chapters\r\nand discussed during the workshop. Although, for the convenience of\r\nclassification, warm season and cool season legumes have been\r\ndifferentiated in the previous chapters, henceforth both groups are\r\nconsidered in unison. There are similar trends and constraints in both\r\ngroups and they are indeed merging in terms of their adaptation and\r\ndistribution, due to development of genotypes of wider adaptation\r\nthan traditional landraces and with less sensitivity to environmental\r\nfactors such as photoperiod and temperature.\r\nThere is a need to substantially reverse the overall negative trends\r\nfor legumes area and productivity in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP).\r\nDevelopment of sustainable cropping systems requires reintroduction\r\nof legumes in cereal dominated cropping systems, and crop\r\ndiversification generally. Food legumes are complementary to, rather\r\nthan competitive wi th, cereal crops in both the cropping system and\r\nthe human diet. Suggestions for progress are discussed. But progress\r\nwill ultimately depend on formation of multidisciplinary working groups implementing focused research and development (R&D)\r\nendeavors.
