Parts 1 and 2 have both benefited from extensive inputs and review by field staff from CRS and other organizations who face, on a daily basis, many of the challenges described in the manual. We wish to acknowledge the organizations, staff, and farmers who participated in the use of seed vouchers and fairs in northern Uganda and especially in southern Sudan. We also want to thank Ajay Varadachary and the staff of the ICRISAT Public Awareness Office for their hard work in editing and publishing this document. This manual was made possible through the generous financial support of the United States Agency for International Development/Bureau for Humanitarian Response/Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (Grant No. LAG-G-00-9300042). abstract: This manual describes a new approach to post-emergency seed distribution in Africa, where farmers receive not free seed but vouchers that can be exchanged for seed at a specially organized seed fair. Seed fairs rely on commercial seed firms (where they are in operation), as well as local seed producers and traders. This approach allows farmers to choose what crops/ varieties and quantities they want. The manual provides an overview of seed systems and their components, and describes how to plan and implement the seed voucher/seed fair approach. The examples quoted are from southern Sudan, but the approach can be adapted for use in other disaster-affected areas as well. © date: 2002 date_type: published publisher: International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics place_of_pub: Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India pages: 72 institution: International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?hl=en&q=allintitle%3A+%22Seed+vouchers+and+fairs%3A+a+manual+for+seed-based+agricultural+recovery+after+disaster+in+Africa%22&btnG=Search&as_sdt=0%2C5&as_ylo=&as_vis=0 related_url_type: author funders: United States Agency for International Development funders: Bureau for Humanitarian Response funders: Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance citation: ICRISAT, - (2002) Seed vouchers and fairs: a manual for seed-based agricultural recovery after disaster in Africa.
