bibo:abstract "Members of the worldwide sorghum (Sorghum spp.)\r\ncommunity, including private sector and international\r\nscientists as well as community representatives from\r\nclosely related crops such as sugarcane (Saccharum\r\nspp.) and maize (Zea mays), met in St. Louis, Missouri,\r\non November 9, 2004, to lay the groundwork for\r\nfuture advances in sorghum genomics and, in particular,\r\nto coordinate plans for sequencing of the sorghum\r\ngenome. Key developments that made this\r\nworkshop timely included advances in knowledge of\r\nthe sorghum genome that provide for the development\r\nof a genetically anchored physical map to guide\r\nsequence assembly and annotation, the growing role\r\nof the sorghum genome as a nucleation point for\r\ncomparative genomics of diverse tropical grasses including\r\nmany leading crops, and the need for dramatically\r\nincreased sorghum production to sustain\r\nhuman populations in many regions where its inherent\r\nabiotic stress tolerance makes it an essential\r\nstaple. This report reviews current knowledge of the\r\nsorghum genome, a community-endorsed schema for\r\nintegrating this knowledge into a finished sequence,\r\nand early plans for translating the sequence into\r\nsustained advances to benefit a worldwide group of\r\nstakeholders."^^xsd:string;
