bibo:abstract "Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) is one of the key crops of\r\nthe semi-arid tropics. It is commonly cultivated as a foodfeed\r\ncrop that provides pods for human food and haulms\r\nfor livestock feeding (Larbi et al. 1999, Omokanye et al.\r\n2001). From farmer participatory studies in the Deccan\r\nplateau of India, Rama Devi et al. (2000) concluded that\r\nfood from grain/pods and fodder from the crop residues\r\nalmost equally contribute to livelihoods in mixed-crop\r\nlivestock systems. It was because of this important dualpurpose\r\nusage of groundnut that the groundnut\r\nimprovement group of the International Crops Research\r\nInstitute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and\r\nlivestock nutrition group of the International Livestock\r\nResearch Institute (ILRI), Patancheru, India started to\r\nexplore collaboratively the potential for improving pod\r\nyield and haulm quantity and quality.
