Previous physical and physiological evidence suggested that LSW originates from the plant. This was confirmed by radioactive labelling methods using tritium and carbon-14. Tritiated water applied to the soil of potted seedlings was translocated to the surface of the whorl leaf. There were significant differences in the amount of tritiated water collected from susceptible (CSH 5) and resistant (IS 18551) genotypes. Studies with carbon-14 labelling of sorghum seedlings indicated the presence of (small amounts of) solutes in the surface water that may affect larval movement and survival. %Z We sincerely thank Drs K B Laryea and V Subramanian, of the shoot fly research adhoc working group for their useful suggestions during this work. The laboratory help of Mr R Luke is gratefully acknowledged. This paper was submitted as JA No. 1514 by the International Crops Research lnstitute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).
