"Global warming and extreme temperatures are\r\npredicted in the future, hence identifi cation of\r\nappropriate varieties that could adapt to such\r\nchanges is imperative for sustaining crop productivity.\r\nThirty-fi ve early maturing chickpea\r\n(Cicer arietinum L.) germplasm accessions were\r\nevaluated for their tolerance to heat stress.\r\nPlant traits such as plant width, fl owering duration,\r\ndays to maturity, pod number, seed weight,\r\ngrain yield and per-day productivity were\r\naffected under heat stress. Genotypes differed\r\nin their sensitivity to heat stress, and the yield\r\nloss among genotypes varied from 10 to 15%\r\nof potential yield for every degree increase in\r\ntemperature beyond the optimum temperature\r\nrange. Multiple regression analysis indicated\r\nthat the plant trait expression can be predicted\r\naccurately for the assumed change in climate\r\non the basis of mean temperature, daylength,\r\nduration of bright sunshine, incident solar radiation,\r\nrelative humidity, wind velocity, and potential\r\nevaporation. Mitigation of heat stress by\r\nirrigation and application of additional nitrogen\r\nto the crop resulted in sustaining the potential\r\nyield (up to 80%). ICC 14346 showed high tolerance\r\nto heat stress and could be used as a\r\nparent in crop improvement research. ICC 5597,\r\nICC 5829, ICC 6121, ICC 7410, ICC 11916, ICC\r\n13124, ICC 14284, ICC 14368, and ICC 14653\r\nwere heat stress tolerant, responsive to irrigation\r\nand nitrogen management, and consistently\r\nhigh yielding (>1400 kg ha–1) compared with the\r\ncontrol ICCV 92944 (1333 kg ha–1)."^^ .
