The tapetum showed signs of disintegration, suggesting that the development of the PMCs had progressed; the PMC developed into tetrads. Signs of meiotic failure appeared later when cytoplasm was seen to separate from the wall of the newly formed pollen grain; vacuolation then occurred and the pollen eventually became clear and unstained. Meiotic failure of the genetic-cytoplasmic male-sterile line occurred at a later stage than that reported for genetic male-sterile sources.} }
