note: This workshop was organized with the active support of several organizations/institutions.
 Some of the notable ones are: Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA);
 Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV); Indian Institute of Soil Science (IISS);
 BAIF Development Research Foundation (BAIF); Khon Kaen University (KKU); Royal Thai
 Department of Agriculture; and Vietnam Agricultural Science Institute (VASI).
 Many individuals contributed to the success of the workshop. We sincerely thank Dr T D Long
 for inaugurating the workshop. Thanks are particularly due to Drs S M Virmani, P Pathak, Piara
 Singh, Y S Chauhan, and A Ramakrishna who so efficiently organized all the arrangements for
 the workshop. M/s K N V Satyanarayana and Y Prabhakar Rao undertook the various
 secretarial tasks graciously. We sincerely thank VASI and KKU for the overall local support
 provided for the workshop and its outcome. Ms Sheila Vijayakumar has provided invaluable
