Natural Resource Management Program Report no. 2 ispublished: pub subjects: s1.1 subjects: s1.2 full_text_status: public monograph_type: research_report abstract: Legumes are important crops and a major component of rice-based cropping systems (RBCS) in many Asian countries. Crop establishment following rice is an important constraint to production and is profoundly affected by soil physical, chemical, and biological factors, and by soil management. Considerable research has been done to understand the role of these factors on crop establishment. This review evaluates these studies and investigates future research needs, which include: classification of post-rice environments in terms of suitability for legumes; breeding programs specific to legume improvement for post-rice environments; seed characteristics allowing germination in still-saturated and compact soils; enriching germination and seedling vigor; and development of appropriate implements for tillage and sowing in post-rice soils. date: 2001 date_type: published publisher: International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics place_of_pub: Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India institution: International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics department: Natural Resources Management Progarm related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?as_q=Establishment+of+legumes+following+rice+-+a+review&num=10&btnG=Search+Scholar&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&as_sdt=1.&as_sdtp=on&as_sdtf=&as_sdts=5&hl=en related_url_type: author funders: Asian Development Bank citation: Awadhwal, N K and Gowda, C L L and Chauhan, Y S and Pande, S and Flower, D J and Haware, M P and Rego, T J and Saxena, N P and Shanower, T G and Johansen, C (2001) Establishment of legumes following rice - a review.
