abstract: Two field experiments were carried out in Andhra Pradesh, India, in which chickpea plants were exposed to a range of densities of Helicoverpa armigera at two critical stages of crop development. In the first experiment there was no relationship between insect density and grain mass per plant. In the second experiment there was also no direct relationship between initial insect density and pod damage at harvest, but there was a strong relationship between percentage damage by H. armigera and the mean dry mass of the plants.
