Arachis hypogaea cv. TMV2, susceptible to late leaf spot (LLS; Mycosphaerella berkeleyi), was used. Infected crop debris was spread on infector rows of TMV2 and these were sprayed with a conidial suspension (20?000 conidia/ml). Freshly prepared aqueous leaf extracts of Datura metel (2% w/v) and Lawsonia inermis (5% w/v) and chlorothalonil (0.2% w/v) were applied as foliar sprays at 500 litres/ha at 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 days after sowing (DAS). Plots sprayed with water were maintained as a control. Disease severity was recorded on a 1-9 scale at intervals of 10 days starting from 45 DAS. In control plots, complete defoliation occurred at 96 DAS and LLS severity was rated as 9. Extract of D. metel continuously reduced disease progress up to 115 DAS and severity of LLS at harvest (115 DAS) was significantly less than the control. L. inermis extract contained disease progress up to 95 DAS (7.3 severity) while disease severity was considerably less in plots sprayed with chlorothalonil compared with those sprayed with the two leaf extracts.
