"Cajanus platycarpus, a distantly related\r\nwild species, was successfully crossed with cultivated\r\npigeonpea using embryo rescue and tissue\r\nculture techniques. Advance generation lines showed\r\na range of desirable characters including cytoplasmic\r\nmale sterility. A range of pigeonpea cultivars\r\nrestored fertility and was maintained by a few lines\r\nincluding cultivar ICPL 85010. Clasmogamous flowers\r\nwere observed in the male sterile lines. In such\r\nflowers anthers did not form di-adlephous bundle.\r\nCytological analysis revealed that meiosis proceeded\r\nnormally till the tetrad stage in those anthers with\r\npollen grains. After which many of the pollen grains\r\nturned sterile. In the anthers with pollen grains,\r\ndehiscence was not observed, thus creating functional\r\nsterility. In many other anthers, pollen mother cells\r\n(PMCs) were not formed at all, giving rise to\r\nsepalous anthers. In conclusion two mechanisms of\r\nmale sterility existed, one was premeiotic, where\r\nPMCs did not form and in the second, although\r\nPMCs gave rise to pollen grains, they were either\r\npartially or totally sterile accompanied by nondehiscence\r\nof anther wall."^^ .
