	bibo:abstract "Genetic biofortification is a cost-effective\r\nstrategy to address iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies\r\nprevalent worldwide. Being a rich and cheap protein\r\nsource, chickpea, a food legume grown and consumed\r\nacross the globe, is a good target for biofortification.\r\nNineteen popular commercial cultivars of India were\r\nanalysed for Fe and Zn content at four locations\r\nrepresenting different agro-climatic zones to study the\r\ngenotypic and genotype 9 environment interactions\r\non Fe and Zn. Distribution of phytic acid (PA), an\r\nimportant anti-nutrient that chelates and reduces the\r\nmineral bioavailability, was also analysed. Influence\r\nof other agronomic traits like days to flowering, plant height and 100 seed weight on Fe and Zn content was\r\nalso studied. All the traits showed significant G and\r\nG 9 E interactions; however, the magnitude of variance\r\nof GXE was lesser than that of G alone.\r\nGenotype ? genotype-by-environment and genotype-\r\nby-trait biplots were used to assess the relations\r\nbetween different environments, genotypes and traits.\r\nIron and zinc content showed positive correlation\r\nbetween them indicating a possibility of their coselection\r\nin breeding. A negative correlation between\r\nZn and PA was observed. However, there was very\r\nlow variability for PA content in the cultivars under\r\nstudy, indicating that moderate PA is naturally\r\nselected in these cultivars during breeding. Despite\r\nsignificant GXE interactions, cultivars with high Fe\r\n([70 lg/g) and Zn content ([40 lg/g) at three out of\r\nfour test locations were identified. Such genotypes will be useful in breeding programs for enhancing mineral\r\nmicronutrient content and understanding the molecular\r\nmechanisms governing their differential uptake."^^xsd:string;
