"Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.), the\r\nmajor source of minerals and dietary energy for people\r\nliving in the semi-arid regions of Sahel, is regularly\r\ndamaged by millet head miner, Heliocheilus albipunctella.\r\nIn order to identify the plant-based resistance\r\nsources for millet head miner along with high\r\ngrain Fe and Zn, we have screened forty pearl millet\r\ngenotypes, using an artificial infestation method.\r\nAnalysis of variance revealed significant differences\r\nin the genotypes tested for head miner resistance. The\r\ngenotypes Gamoji, ICMP 177001, ICMP 177002,\r\nICMV 177003, ICMV IS 90311, LCIC9702, Souna 3,\r\nICMV IS 94206 and PE08043 exhibited antibiosis\r\nresistance mechanism to Heliocheilus albipunctella\r\nwith appreciable agronomy and grain yield when\r\ncompared with the susceptible check ICMV IS 92222.\r\nThe genotypes Faringuero, ICMV 167005, ICMV IS\r\n99001, Sadore local, SOSAT-C88, and ICMP 177004\r\nexhibited tolerance to head miner damage with good\r\nper se performance. The genotypes ICMP 177001,\r\nICMP 177002, ICMV 177003, and Moro exhibited\r\nresistance to millet head miner and had consistent\r\ngrain Fe content across seasons (ranging from 44 to\r\n70 ppm). Association between the head miner resistance\r\nand morphological traits showed a positive and significant correlation of larval production index (%)\r\nwith head miner damage (r = 0.59**). Grain Fe and\r\nZn contents exhibited negative association with panicle\r\nlength and grain yield indicating proper care\r\nshould be taken in breeding for these traits. Hence, the\r\nidentified resistance sources can be effectively utilized\r\nin breeding head miner resistant pearl millet OPV’s/\r\nhybrids, with high grain yield including Fe and Zn\r\nconcentrations, to overcome the hunger and malnutrition\r\nseen in populations living in the semi-arid tropics."^^ .
