"High oleic peanuts and derived food\r\nproducts offer longer shelf life benefits to the food\r\nprocessing industry in addition to multiple health\r\nbenefits to the consumers. The two mutant alleles,\r\nahFAD2A and ahFAD2B control composition of oleic,\r\nlinoleic and palmitic acid content in peanut. A total of\r\n563 peanut pre-breeding lines were tested for the\r\npresence ahFAD2A and ahFAD2B mutant alleles\r\nusing allele specific markers. The ahFAD2A mutant\r\nallele was present in 82 lines, while none of these lines\r\nhad ahFAD2B mutant allele. Among botanical types,\r\nahFAD2A mutant allele was more frequent in lines\r\nwith Virginia growth habit than Spanish bunch\r\nalthough no correlation of ahFAD2A mutant allele\r\nwith high oleic acid content and growth habit could be\r\nestablished. Oleic and linoleic acid content in 82 prebreeding\r\nlines ranged from 39.70 to 62.70% and 17.76 to 31.95%, respectively, with maximum oleic to\r\nlinoleic acid ratio of 4. Oleic acid was found to be\r\nnegatively correlated with linoleic and palmitic acid.\r\nFurther, pre-breeding lines with ahFAD2A mutant\r\nallele, high oleic content and high oleic to linoleic\r\nratio were investigated and novel lines were identified\r\nfor resistance to late leaf spot, short duration, higher\r\npod yield and other yield related traits. These novel\r\npre-breeding lines can be used as a potential donor in\r\npeanut improvement programme and to diversify the\r\nprimary gene pool including initiating further research\r\non induction of fresh ahFAD2B mutant allele."^^ .
