bibo:abstract "In the quest to promote bamboo agroforestry\r\nin the dry semi-deciduous forest zone of\r\nGhana, we evaluated changes in soil properties, crop\r\nproductivity and the economic potential of a bamboobased\r\nintercropping system. The intercropping system\r\nwas established from 3-months old sympodial\r\nbamboo (Bambusa balcooa) seedlings planted at a\r\n5 m95 m spacing and intercropped with maize,\r\ncassava or cowpea. Separate monocropping fields for\r\nmaize, cassava, cowpea and bamboo were set up\r\nadjacent to the intercropped field. In both the\r\nintercropping and monocropping fields, plots were\r\nwith fertilizer treatments and without. The experiment\r\nwas laid out in a split plot design with four\r\nreplicates and studied over three years. Economic\r\nanalysis was conducted using the financial benefit-cost ratio method. The results showed that regardless\r\nof fertilizer treatments, bamboo agroforestry and\r\nmonocropped fields had comparable effects on soil\r\nproperties and crop productivity within two years of\r\nestablishment. In the third year, however, bamboo\r\nagroforestry had significantly (p\\0.05) higher soil\r\nmoisture, pH and crop productivity levels. An\r\nintercropping advantage over monocropping was\r\nevident for all crops with respective partial land\r\nequivalent ratios for fertilized and non-fertilized\r\nintercropped systems as follows: cowpea (1.37 and\r\n1.54), maize (1.38 and 1.36), and cassava (1.12 and\r\n1.19). The economic evaluation also indicated\r\nmarginal profitability of bamboo intercropping over\r\nmonocropping systems. From the results obtained,\r\nthere are clear indications that where bamboo is a\r\nprioritized woody perennial, integrated systems with\r\ncrops may be encouraged."^^xsd:string;
