	bibo:abstract "Successful irrigated agriculture is underpinned by answering two\r\ncritical questions: when and how much to irrigate. This article quantifies\r\nthe role of the Chameleon and the Wetting Front Detector,\r\nmonitoring tools facilitating decision-making and learning about soilwater-\r\nnutrient dynamics. Farmers retained nutrients in the root zone\r\nby reducing irrigation frequency, number of siphons, and event\r\nduration. Water productivity increased by more than 100% for farmers\r\nboth with and without monitoring tools. Transitioning smallholder\r\nirrigation systems into profitable and sustainable schemes\r\nrequires investment in technology, farmers and institutions.\r\nImportantly, technologies need embedding in a learning environment\r\nthat fosters critical feedback mechanisms, such as market\r\nconstraints."^^xsd:string;
