"Frequent utilization of wild Cicer species in\r\nchickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) improvement\r\nprograms, as well as the regeneration of these\r\nwild species for efficient conservation in genebanks,\r\nis hindered due to photoperiod and/or\r\ntemperature sensitivity (vernalization). In this\r\nstudy, the response to four extended photoperiod\r\ntreatments (15, 18, 21, and 24 h) was\r\ncompared with a control (12 h) for phenology\r\nand growth in terms of reduction in number\r\nof days to first flowering, as well as for yieldrelated\r\ntraits in cultivated chickpea and seven\r\nannual wild Cicer species. The study revealed\r\nthat wild Cicer species required long photoperiods\r\n(varying from 15 to 18 h) for transition\r\nfrom the vegetative to reproductive phase.\r\nOptimum photoperiods also improved agronomic\r\ntraits such as pod number and seed\r\nyield per plant. Of the photoperiods studied,\r\n18 h was the most appropriate photoperiod\r\ntreatment for both reducing the vegetative\r\nphase and for efficient regeneration in C. reticulatum\r\nLadiz. Fifteen hours was the most\r\nappropriate photoperiod in C. judaicum Boiss.\r\nand C. yamashitae Kitamura. Both 15 and 18 h\r\nwere the most appropriate photoperiods in C.\r\nbijugum K.H. Rech. and C. pinnatifidum Jaub.\r\n& Sp., depending on the objective (15 h for\r\nregeneration and 18 h for reducing vegetative\r\nphase). Cicer chorassanicum (Bunge) M. Pop.\r\nand C. cuneatum Hochst. ex A. Rich. showed\r\na weak response to all the extended photoperiod\r\ntreatments. These results contribute to\r\nenhanced utilization of wild Cicer species for\r\nchickpea improvement through synchronization\r\nof flowering facilitating hybridization and\r\nfor efficient regeneration by using speciesspecific\r\nextended photoperiod treatments."^^ .
