bibo:abstract "As a reflection of its importance in many plant\r\nfunctions including nutrient and water uptake,\r\nanchoring and mechanical support, as an interface\r\nbetween the plant and soil, root system architecture\r\nstudy has become a topic on its own in many research\r\nareas. Therefore, current research undertakings are\r\ngeared towards unraveling the development and\r\narchitecture of root systems with the premises that it\r\nholds important information towards its exploitation\r\nin any research program, which aims to increase plant\r\nperformance and economic yield. Nevertheless, there\r\nis a well-established fact that Root System\r\nArchitecture (RSA) varies among different plant\r\nspecies, and the variation is well implicated, even\r\nwithin the same species, which is governed by the\r\nplant genotype and environment. Furthermore, the\r\ninherent difficulty of studying the root system\r\n(because of soil opacity) makes them recognized as\r\nbeing ‘the hidden half’ (Waisel et al., 2005), and\r\nbecause of the aforementioned factors, and/or\r\nprobably some other unforeseen reasons, RSA has\r\ntraditionally been neglected by researchers (for\r\nexample plant breeders) in terms of integrating it as\r\nan important selection criterion in crop improvement\r\nprogram."^^xsd:string;
