note: The successful publication of this handbook and related sorghum manuscripts hold their successes to the established collaboration among International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation (NCAM), Ilorin, National Agricultural Extension Research and Liaison Services (NAERLS), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Zonal offices of the Agricultural Transformation Support Program (ATASP-1) of Adani-Omor, Bida-Baddegi, Kano-Jigawa and Kebbi-Sokoto, several farmer groups and the demands by Innovation platform members (IPs). ICRISAT and the authors are grateful to the management of these organisations. The authors gratefully acknowledge the work of other researchers whose publications have helped immensely in compiling this guide.
This handbook has been developed in alignment with the objectives of intensification of sorghum production by the Sorghum commodity under the Outreach project of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program (ATASP-1) being implemented by the ICRISAT. The project is funded by Federal Government of Nigeria through Africa Development Bank. While International Institute for Tropical Agriculture is coordinating the Outreach program (which include cassava, rice and sorghum), ICRISAT is leading in the implementation of the sorghum outreach. ICRISAT is grateful to the Honorable Minister, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nigeria, Chief Audu Ogbeh, and to the President, Africa Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina (ICRISAT Ambassador of Goodwill).The contribution and encouragement of the National and Zonal offices of the ATASP-1 as well as the Outreach partners is greatly appreciated. abstract: Sorghum plays an important role in the diets and economies of people in Nigeria. For instance, the average per capita annual sorghum consumption in major sorghum growing areas is more than 75 kg. Global prices for agricultural commodities have risen dramatically in recent years, making agriculture an attractive investment once again. Industrial demand of sorghum as substitute/compliment of wheat to produce composite flour as well as high energy foods by flour mills and the beverage companies have increased the industrial demand for grain sorghum. It also has higher micronutrients (Fe and Zn) than other cereals like maize, rice and wheat, making it a more healthy food. It is therefore important that significant efforts are made to increase the productivity and production of sorghum to serve the increasing demand.
