"The livestock sector is one of the fastest growing agricultural\r\nsub-sectors in India. It is a rich source of high quality products\r\nsuch as milk, meat and eggs and a source of income and\r\nemployment to millions of rural farmers, particularly women.\r\nAccording to the reports of Central Statistics Office, the value\r\nof outputs from the livestock sector at current prices was about\r\n`811,847 crores during 2015-16, which is about 28.6% of the\r\nvalue of outputs from the agricultural and allied sectors. Within\r\nthis sector, dairying is a livelihood option for many rural poor,\r\nespecially the landless, marginal and small farmers in India. It\r\nserves as an effective tool for rural development, employment\r\nand sustained income and as an insurance against several odds.\r\nMilk production in India during 2015-16 and 2016-17 was 155.5\r\nmillion tonnes and 165.4 million tonnes respectively, showing an\r\nannual growth of 6.37%.\r\nDairy farming in semi-arid India is mainly taken up by\r\nsmallholders who rear animals on crop residues and common\r\nproperty resources. They are handicapped by low capital and\r\nlack of resources and training. Lately, dwindling common\r\nproperty resources are driving farmers to take up intensive\r\nsystems. The dairy scene in India is undergoing changes with\r\nnewer technologies in breeding, feeding, management and\r\ndisease control, underlining the need to adopt scientific dairy\r\nfarming methods. The profitability and sustainability of dairy\r\nfarming in the semi-arid tropics hinges on increased production\r\nand efficiency through the adoption of improved practices that\r\nenhance nutrition and livelihood security."^^ .
