"This study assesses the impact of improved chickpea cultivars in the state of Gujarat in\r\nIndia. It is based on a household survey of chickpea growers spread over 24 villages spanning\r\nfour districts — Panchmahals, Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, and Junagadh. Growth and\r\ninstability in chickpea yield, extent of adoption, on-farm benefits, factors influencing adoption\r\nof improved cultivars, and farmers' perception of varietal traits and constraints are\r\ncritically evaluated. Th e survey revealed that improved chickpea varieties showed distinctly\r\nsuperior performance over local cultivars in terms of yield, net income, and per unit\r\ncost of reduction, proving their cost- and profit-maximizing characteristics. Results from\r\nthe estimated Tobit model suggest that holding size, chickpea duration, and yield risk\r\nsignificantly determined the probability and degree of adoption.
