"Valencia peanuts [Arachis hypogaea L. subsp.\r\nfastigiata Waldron var. fastigiata (Waldron)\r\nKrapov. & W. C. Greg.] are well known for their\r\nin-shell market value. Assessment of genetic\r\ndiversity is key to the success of developing\r\nimproved cultivars with desirable agronomic\r\nand quality traits. Seventy-eight U.S. Valencia\r\ncore collection accessions together with 36\r\nValencia accessions representing the global\r\npeanut mini-core collection were used to study\r\npopulation structure and diversity and to identify\r\ngenetically diverse Valencia germplasm for use\r\nin peanut breeding. Fifty-two simple sequence\r\nrepeats loci amplifi ed 683 alleles, with an average\r\nof 13 alleles per locus. The mean polymorphism\r\ninformation content and gene diversity,\r\nrespectively, were 0.270 and 0.335. The pairwise\r\ngenetic distance ranged from 0.143 to\r\n0.474, with an average of 0.631. Neighbor-joining\r\nclustering, principal coordinate analysis, and\r\nSTRUCTURE analysis consistently separated\r\nthe Valencia germplasm into fi ve clusters with\r\ntwo distinct major groups. The fi rst major group\r\nconsisted of genotypes from South America\r\n(64%) with few accessions from Africa, North\r\nAmerica, Caribbean, and European regions. The\r\nsecond group consisted of accessions mostly\r\nfrom diverse regions of Africa, North and South\r\nAmerica, Asia, and the Caribbean. However, the\r\nstructuring was not related to the geographic\r\norigin and several admixtures were observed.\r\nThe information generated in this study and\r\nphenotyping of this material for biotic and abiotic\r\nstress responses and yield-quality traits will\r\nfacilitate selection of trait-specifi c, genetically\r\ndiverse parents for developing Valencia peanut\r\ncultivars with a broad genetic base."^^ .
