Millspaugh] a hybrid breeding\r\ntechnology, based on the cytoplasmic nuclear\r\nmale-sterility (CMS) system and partial natural\r\noutcrossing, is currently been used. However,\r\nthere are diffi culties to maintain genetic purity\r\nof the hybrids and their parents. The incorporation\r\nof an easily identifi able morphological\r\nmarker (naked eye polymorphism [NEP]) could\r\nbe used to determine seed purity. The morphological\r\nmarker selected for this study, obcordate\r\nleaf, is not present in cultivated pigeonpea; it is\r\ninherited as a single recessive gene and can be\r\nobserved soon after planting (approx. 6 wk). To\r\nincorporate the obcordate leaf shape into hybrid\r\nparents, the trait was transferred from the germplasm\r\naccession ICP 5529 into male-sterile (A\r\nlines) and the corresponding maintainers (B\r\nlines). The hybrids derived from crosses involving\r\nobcordate leaf A lines and normal leaf fertility\r\nrestorers (R lines) were fully fertile and had\r\nnormal lanceolate leaves; thus the difference\r\nbetween A line and hybrids was clear.
