	bibo:abstract "Improved cultivars of pearl millet have been widely adopted in Tamil Nadu State of India, with both public and private sectors playing a significant role in making them available to farmers. The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) made early breakthroughs in pearl millet breeding, which provided a strong base for further research. Farmers prefer improved cultivars because of their high yield, good grain size, pest and disease tolerance, and short duration. The increased production on account of adoption of improved cultivars largely goes to the animal feed industry for use as raw material. However, consumption of pearl millet has sharply declined in Tamil Nadu. Research investment on pearl millet breeding has a high payoff. An analysis of farmlevel efficiency of pearl millet production shows some degree of inefficiency. Strengthening extension education in precise application of inputs for pearl millet production is important."^^xsd:string;
