<dc:description>The workshop on a Research and Networ k Strategy for Sustainable Sorghum and
Pearl Mi l let product ion systems for Lat in America was attended by 28 scientists
f rom four countries in the region — Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Honduras —
and f rom ICRISAT and CIAT The workshop reviewed the research wor k carried out
under the project funded by IDB: project milestones, methodology adapted, and
progress made to achieve the milestones; network trials results and status of sorghum
and pearl mi l let research in the region. Further, the workshop ident i f ied bottlenecks
in returning data, formulated the methods of trials or seed dist r ibut ion, ident i f ied
coordinators for each country, and out l ined the research thrusts for further research.
These include: extending the research to other zones (fertile areas and drought -
prone areas) besides acid savanna soils; enhancing research on pearl mi l let to 30%
(sorghum 70%) f rom the present 10%; nutrient uptake efficiency (sorghum); and use
of pearl mi l let as soil organic content enricher. This publication contains the
presentations made at the meeting and a summary of the recommendations. It thus
provides an overview of the current status of the research in the IDB -funded project,
and discusses the problems and prospects for sorghum and pearl mi l let production in
the region.</dc:description>
