"The progress in genetic improvement of post-rainy sorghum\r\nfor drought tolerance using traditional plant breeding practices\r\nhas been slow, and selection has not been much effective due\r\nto complex interaction between genotype and environment.\r\nIdentification of genetic factors involved in stay-green through\r\nmolecular breeding approaches would provide the basis for\r\ngenetic improvement for drought tolerance. In this experiment\r\nstay-green QTLs were mapped and the effect of environment\r\non stay-green expression was observed. For this a sorghum Recombinant\r\nInbred Line (RIL) population was field evaluated for\r\n2 years during the post-rainy season of 2011 and 2012, under\r\ntwo water regimes, (stress and control). A set of 200 entries,\r\nincluding 180 RILs, parents and checks were sown in a plot\r\nof 2 rows of 2m in RCBD design with 3 and 2 replications for\r\nstress and control treatments, respectively. Data was recorded\r\nfor percent green leaf area (%GLA) with a weekly interval\r\nbasis (7 counts) with starting from 50% flowering till physiological\r\nmaturity. This reveals significant genotypic variances\r\nalong with high heritability. A genetic linkage map based on\r\n176 RILs with 271 markers consisting of SSRs, DArT and two\r\nqualitative traits was developed. In total 45 QTLs were identified\r\nfor seven %GLA scores in two seasons and two treatments.\r\nThe phenotypic variation explained by each QTL ranged\r\nfrom 6.00 to 14.00%. In further across environment analysis,\r\nsome QTLs may be environment specific and some may consistent\r\nacross environment, such stable QTLs could be utilized\r\nthrough genomics approaches to improve drought tolerance of\r\npost rainy sorghum varieties."^^ .
