"Literature shows that women in many African farming communities\r\nare more involved in agricultural production activities\r\nthan men, but their capacities, including access to key farm resources\r\nand markets are lower, leading to gender differentials\r\nin productivity or yield gaps. In Uganda, women make up 53%\r\nof the agricultural labor force, but reportedly manage plots that\r\nare 20-30% less productive than plots managed by the men.\r\nThis study analyses groundnut production differences among\r\nfemale and male farmers in Uganda. Yield gaps between the\r\nmale and female farmers are considered at two levels; differences\r\nbetween actual and potential yields, and differences between\r\nexpected and actual yields. A total of 240 randomly selected\r\nfarmers (58% females) were interviewed using a pre-tested\r\nquestionnaire. Using regression analysis, factors that contributed\r\nto groundnut yield gaps among and between female and male\r\nfarmers were determined. Results show that both female and\r\nmale farmers experience a yield gap ranging from about 20%\r\nto 37%. The results further indicate that more men than women\r\nuse improved seed, fungicides, and carry out timely weeding; the\r\ncrucial factors that affect groundnut output and yield. Majority\r\nof farmers, especially women, use home saved seeds and fewer\r\nimproved technologies due to high cost, leading to low production.\r\nOther factors contributing to the yield gap are socio-demographic,\r\neconomic and institutional factors including less access\r\nto extension services by women, less access to and/or control\r\nover land, lower affordability of labor and other key inputs."^^ .
